Wimpy, Wimpy, Wimpy!

July 5th, 2008 at 10:20 am

As I wrote the title to this post, the old garbage bag commercial was going through my head. {Wimpy, Wimpy, Wimpy!} However, this post is not about garbage. Rather, it's about Savings.

I will disclose that June was our first month of really saving money. I opened 6 Orange Savings Accounts, 4 IRAs (half for DH and half for me), and 1 HSBC Savings Account.

Now, some people could probably have all of their emergency, rainy day, and their down payment funds all in one account - and keep it fairly organized. I cannot. That's why I have a gazillion accounts now. Taking into account how easy the accounts are to open, and transfer funds to (via ACH), I am as pleased as a pig in a mud puddle.

If you take a gander to the left, you will see that I updated our savings balances. "A combined total for the kids savings - $12.00?!?!" I know. Wimpy! BUT!! it's a start. And that's $4.00 more than they each had in May. Right? So - it looks small, but I know that over time, it will grow!

Also - I earned $0.16 in interest in June! Wahoo!! {hehe}

Now that I have my savings on Auto-Pilot...I need to KILL my debt. I have seen some of the cards go down - but I want them GONE. DH's first paycheck of the month pays all of the credit cards, cell phone bill, and a few other things. On that payday alone, I have 14 bills to pay. I am tired - and I want to reduce the number of bills I have to think about each month. Thankfully, DH has 5 paychecks in August and October. Those 5th paychecks are going to credit card debt. That should take out a huge chunk*!

*Note: While we do have 14 cards between us, the highest balance (and credit limits)on our major credit cards is $500. We do have Dell and Kay Jewelers, both with 1800.00. So only about 7K in credit card debt.

Anyway, I am off to see if I can perfect Biscuits and Gravy this morning. Wish me luck!

    I'm with you on being tired of paying all my stuff. I can't wait until there are only a couple of major bills a month.

    Its a lot more satisfying to kill off the little debts than the big ones.

    Genuinely curious, not accusatory at all - why each of you both a traditional and a Roth IRA for 2008?

  3. Debt Dummy Says:

    Baselle, no worries. We each have a Traditional and a Roth because I don't understand the TRUE benefit to either (or rather, one over the other). I know for a fact, at the speed I am depositing, neither will even be close to funded for 2008, so I just opened both for now. I deal with traditional IRAs on a daily basis (my company {Bank} does not offer Roth's), so I opened those first. Then everyone asked why I didn't open Roths. So I opened those too.

    At your age, you need to open Roth IRA's. Then you can take out the money tax free when you retire!! With a regular IRA, you will have to pay taxes when you retire.
